River Plate History

The club was founded on 25 May 1901, in La Boca neighborhood, Buenos Aires. The team achieved promotion to the first division in 1908.

In 1905, River Plate is associated with Fottball Association to make its first soccer participation. He starts participating in the third division, and in the first official game, played on 4/30/1905, he loses 3-2 against the Faculty of Medicine. Later the first victory in history would arrive: the 7 of May of the same year in its first stage in the Dock Sud, River beat to Gral. Belgrano ‘A’ by 4 to 3.

The 27 of December of 1908 and by the end of the Second Division, River Plate beats Racing 7-0 and obtains the ascent to First Division. On 2/5/1909, River meets his first participation in the Superior Circle, beating Argentino de Quilmes by 5 to 0 in the Dock Sud.

On 4/18/1915 River moved his stadium to Aristóbulo del Valle and Gaboto, and in the first game he beat 5-0 to San Isidro. A month later, more exactly 16/5, that stadium is officially inaugurated and River returns to winning for 5 to 0 this time to G.E.B.A . The first and only championship of the amateur era was obtained in 1921, when on January 9 River Plate defeated Quilmes by 2 to 0.

In the year 1923, River Plate changes its stadium again. This time it is in Alvear and Tagle and in its inauguration on May 20, River beats Peñarol 2-1. In 1931, the professional era began. In the first game River Plate beat Atlanta as a visitor by 1 to 0.

The popularity of the club was growing in such a way that it was necessary to move back to a bigger stadium. On July 13, 1934, the club acquired 51,763 square meters of land where the Monumental Stadium would later be built. This stadium was inaugurated on May 25, 1938. In a friendly match, River Plate beat Peñarol by 3 to 1. From the era of professionalism, in 1931, River Plate became the most winning club in Argentine football. He also won the Libertadores de América Cups of 1986 and 1996, the Intercontinental Cup of 1986, the Inter-American Cup of 1987 and the Super Cup of 1997.
